What is Exilis ULTRA?
Exilis ULTRA is an exciting new technology that uses radio frequency (RF) energy for body contouring and skin tightening. It is a non-surgical procedure that reduces fat and firms skin in the face and body. Exilis is an FDA-approved treatment that demonstrably smooths cellulite dimples and creates firmer, more youthful-looking skin.
During an Exilis ULTRA treatment, precisely controlled radio frequency energy is used to heat the deeper layers of the skin. This heat causes fat cells to shrink and contracts the skin tissue, stimulating new collagen production in the process.
How is the procedure performed?
Exilis procedures at THE GLENMORE CLINIC in Calgary are safe, fast, and relatively pain-free. During an Exilis session, you will feel a sensation of heat as the RF waves target your deep skin tissue to melt away fat cells and stimulate collagen production. The Exilis device has a built-in cooling mechanism that will keep this heat from becoming unbearable. Most patients find Exilis to be comfortable, with the heat sensation described as a “warm massage.”
Exilis sessions generally take anywhere from fifteen to forty-five minutes, depending on the areas to be treated. There is no recovery time necessary, so you can return to your everyday life immediately following a session.

Exilis is extremely safe and has almost no side effects. In some instances, a patient may experience some minor irritation in the area which was treated.
As the Exilis ULTRA device is guided over the area to be treated, you will feel a deep heating sensation. Exilis ULTRA radio frequency energy is delivered to the deeper layers of the skin. The underside of the applicator provides cooling to the skin’s surface, keeping you more comfortable during the treatment.
Treatment times vary on the size of the target area but typically range from 15 to 45 minutes.
The Exilis ULTRA platform was designed to deliver energy in a short treatment of under an hour for greater patient convenience and comfort. Multiple Exilis sessions are needed in order to achieve full results. The number of treatments will vary depending on the individual, but generally, four to six treatments are recommended.
There is no downtime with this procedure. There may be temporary pinkness or redness in the skin for about 20-30 minutes that quickly subsides. Since there is no downtime or special care required once you leave the office, you can carry on with the rest of your day’s activities immediately following treatment.
You may start to see some body contouring and skin tightening results after just 1 to 2 Exilis ULTRA treatments, but in most cases, your optimal result will be achieved after the third or fourth treatment. Treatments will be spaced out over 1 to 2 week intervals.
While multiple sessions are needed to see full results, these results are long-lasting. If you follow post-treatment instructions and lead a healthy lifestyle, Exilis results will last for years.
It is important that you are very well hydrated before, during and after your Exilis ULTRA treatment to achieve maximum results. It is also recommended that you partake is some sort of light exercise, such as walking, for 30-40 minutes following body treatments in order to maximize results.
Exilis is good for tightening, firming, and smoothing skin, making it ideal for smoothing out cellulite dimples or restoring sagging skin. Exilis is not, however, meant for fat reduction. If you are looking to lose inches, other procedures such as CoolSculpting® may be better for you. However, Coolsculpting® does not tighten skin, so once you have finished your Coolsculpting treatment you may require skin tightening.
Many factors contribute to cellulite and presents as an irregularity of skin contour – often as a dimpled surface of orange-peel or cottage cheese texture. The basic physiology of cellulite has not been identified but is determined by the amount of body fat and the support of adipose tissues within fibrous septae. The Exilis ULTRA, a radiofrequency (RF)-based, skin-tightening platform, has been granted FDA approval for temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. The monopolar focused RF device, which is engineered with advanced cooling, heats the dermis, causing collagen support tissues to remodel, tighten and firm. Using a new protocol to treat areas with underlying fat deposits, the device has also shown temporary improvements in the appearance of cellulite.
Cellulite is by far one of the most requested procedures. Unfortunately, there are no permanent treatments for cellulite, only for the temporary reduction of the appearance of cellulite.
There are many treatment options available, including: BTL Cellutone™, BTL Exilis™, and CoolSculpting®. The best treatment results are usually a combination of one or more of the treatment options.
One critical part of a cellulite treatment plan is to utilize mechanical vibrations enhance microcirculation and oxygen supply in the affected area resulting in increased blood supply and removal of excess interstitial fluid. This is needed to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Exilis ULTRA is not a replacement for weight loss and results will not be as dramatic as with liposuction. It is better used for smaller areas of localized fat that have not responded well to diet or exercise and for areas where non-surgical skin tightening is requested.
